In my pursuit of a career in art education, my teaching philosophy centers around creating an environment that encourages students to establish meaningful connections—with themselves, each other, their local community, and the broader world. Recognizing the transformative power of art in fostering self-discovery and understanding one's place in the world, I believe this is particularly crucial for the development of young minds.
A pillar of my teaching philosophy is the commitment to cultivating an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment. Art serves as a potent tool to empower students in exploring their own identity and understanding and appreciating the diverse perspectives of their classmates. My commitment to a culturally responsive framework is grounded in recognizing and valuing the unique perspectives, culture, and experiences each student brings to the classroom.
I am dedicated to integrating a community based and eco-pedagogy into my teaching practices, recognizing the urgent need for social and environmental awareness. I strive to impart to students that every aspect of an art practice, from the materials we source to the collaborations we engage in and the communities we share our final products with, is interconnected and influential on both local and global scales. These human and ecological relationships underscore the importance of fostering a sense of community and place.
As an art educator, I consider it my responsibility to equip students with the tools, techniques, skills, and diverse purposes associated with art practice—be it advocacy, creative self-expression, design, or identity exploration. Through this exchange of knowledge, my aim is to empower students to develop and personalize their own art practice with intention in their choice of medium and concept. I envision my classroom as a supportive and open-minded atmosphere where students can access their creativity, learn valuable skills, and discover how to tap into their creative potential beyond the confines of the classroom.
